Iris Kufert-Rivo - The artist series (1/1 Edition)
The Apple Box is a familiar sight on film and photography sets, a versatile tool that is pressed into endless service as a seat, step ladder, table, pedestal. We have elevated it to icon status, like Le Corbusier, but rendering it in Baltic birch plywood with rich color on all sides. This simple form evokes the sleek minimalism of Judd and the palette of Barragán.
This Apple Box however, is even more special. A 1/1 edition, painted by the artist Iris Kufert-Rivo.
Through the repetitive use of rectilinear forms and the combination of a straight edge, tape, and palette knife, Kufert-Rivo opens up a world of play in the color space. The paintings are geometric without being rigid, allowing the hand of the artist to show through in their minute imperfections. Shown widely over the last 35 years, Kufert-Rivo's most recent solo show was this year at the Billis Williams Gallery in Los Angeles.
